Lula Mae Jones was born in Meridian, Mississippi on August 5, 1920 to the late Samuel and Leona Sumpter. She was the fifth of eight children, three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Lula accepted Christ as an early age in Lovejoy, Illinois. She moved to Chicago, Illinois and united with Monumental Baptist Church where she served in many capacities for over 50 years.
She was united in holy matrimony to John Jones on April 24, 1964, who also preceded her in death, March of this year.
Lula attended Lovejoy High School and later went to Nursing School in Peoria, Illinois, where she was certified as a Nurse. She relocated to Chicago, Illinois where she worked for several hospitals. She later retired from Jackson Park Hospital III Chicago, Illinois after 19 years of dedicated service.
Lula departed this life, May 12, 2012.
She leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Frederick S. Lewis (Carol); one grandson, Reverend Frederick D. Lewis both of Chicago, Illinois; one great grandson, Deron E. Lewis (Shana) of Piano, Texas; three great-great-grandchildren, Darren, Kerry, and Temari; one sister, Mattie Buckner of Peoria, Illinois; one brother, Alonzo Sumpter (Doris) of Buckhead, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
